Ok, let's look at what Cheney actually said in 2004.
"Senator Kerry began his political career by saying he would like to see our troops deployed "only at the directive of the United Nations.""
Yeah, he did say that. Well before he was a senator.
"During the 1980s, Senator Kerry opposed Ronald Reagan's major defense initiatives that brought victory in the Cold War."
True, he did. But, of course, those initiatives didn't bring victory in the Cold War. The Soviet Union did. He very consistently opposed NBC(or ABC) weapon systems. Which the US never used after WWII. Opposing atomic, biological or chemical weapons, which tend to be a lot more effective against civilians than combatants should be considered as a moral position. Unless you don't actually possess morals. But that is a different issue...
"In 1991, when Saddam Hussein occupied Kuwait and stood poised to dominate the Persian Gulf, Senator Kerry voted against Operation Desert Storm."
Well, you know, Sir George the Old did propose sanctions as the solution. Now, in general, sanctions take more than a month or two be effective. When they didn't prove to be effective after a few weeks, going to war seems to be pretty extreme...
"Senator Kerry doesn't appear to understand how the world has changed. He talks about leading a "more sensitive war on terror," as though al-Qaida will be impressed with our softer side."
Of course, Kerry didn't say that. but you probably know that. True, lying through his teeth isn't foreign to Cheney, but this one takes the cake.
"Senator Kerry denounces American action when other countries don't approve as if the whole object of our foreign policy were to please a few persistent critics."
Of course, it wasn't just a few, insignificant critics. True, we had the backing of countries like Poland, but we lacked the support of countries that actually had resources and experience. Except for Britain. Who seems to be re-thinking things...
"Senator Kerry also takes a different view when it comes to supporting our military. Although he voted to authorize force against Saddam Hussein, he then decided he was opposed to the war, and voted against funding for our men and women in the field."
Well, true. he did vote against the allocation of $87 billion that would include a tax cut. He did vote for the one that didn't. Granted, this might seem as flip-flopping to those who don't have much of a life, but...
So yeah, while Cheney didn't use the exact phrase "Kerry is unfit", he did his best to portray him as such. At least with the first few, all but one by lies and distortions. While some may accept lies and distortions as long as they support their viewpoints as acceptable, I don't... |
