Former Marine Matthew White continues with recollections and explanations of what my Marine recruit son, Stephen, is going through this week. Last week and part of this week was swim week, of which Combat Water Survival training forms the major part. It's very demanding, especially considering that a sizable number of recruits arrive at PI not knowing how to swim at all. (This is true across all the services and has been true for many decades.)

There are five levels of attainment in CWS, with level 1 being the most difficult, level 5 being the easiest. A recruit must pass level 4 to graduate. I am happy to report that my son was one of only 11 recruits in his platoon to achieve level 2. He and five other level 2 swimmers volunteered to try for level 1, so difficult an achievement that they would receive one-on-one instruction for it. Alas, the cadre apparently didn't consider six volunteers sufficient, so no one got to try for level 1.

Stephen reported that attaining level 2 is "very respectable" and that his own commanding officer has never qualified higher than level 2.
