<font size=4>Anchor Says the Media Missed the (Swift) Boat

In the Aug. 30 edition of Broadcasting and Cable magazine, writer Bill McConnell reportsed on an interview with Dan Rather.
<font color=blue>
"CBS newsman Dan Rather says journalists were too slow to do a truth check on the 'swift boat' ads attacking Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's war record. . . . Saying that, in some ways, the Vietnam war is 'as distant as the Napoleonic campaigns,' Rather tells B&C's Bill McConnell in an interview in the Aug. 30 issue that the emphasis on the 'swift boat' story distracted the media from a more important story, which is 'Do [the candidates] have an exit strategy for Iraq? And if so, what is it? How will they address the national deficit? And what are the chances their plans will work?'

Although Rather also said it's 'quite legitimate to
report' on the swift boat veterans' charges, 'some of the
press failed the test—and I don’t exclude myself,' in
questioning 'whether their answers were truthful.'

Despite Rather lamenting that he was not quick to question the group, he's been lashing out at the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth since even before they launched their ad campaign. In May he announced at the top of the CBS Evening News: <font color=blue>"Playing the Vietnam card. How an experienced and successful Republican operation made up of veterans is attacking Vietnam war hero John Kerry. We'll give you the inside story."<font color=black>

Like the Kerry campaign has done, Rather accused the group of having Republican ties. <font color=blue>"Others allied with the Bush campaign attacked Senator Kerry today more directly and more personally."
