You are assuming the media will actually do fact checking. There isn't a shred of evidence of them doing that for a long time, why would they start now?

The reps have given dems good ammo to call them stone faced liars...they will come back swinging and the media likes an underdog who fights like a junkyard dog. I for one am waiting for kerry to show his canines and will cheer when he does.
