Is the press waking up? Well, sort of. But, the media is largely controllable via access; that is, denial of access. Reporters generally live and die by access to administration officials, and once that carrot is taken away, they wither and blow away.

Which is why we saw Chris Matthews wimp out and suck up to that lunatic Zell Miller, when Miller challenged Matthews to a duel. Matthews knows that if he can't get rightists onto his show, his ratings will decline.

The right wing has successfully modified the media's perception of its job and responsibilities. The job of the media is to keep an eye on government, as a check against the kind of crap being pulled by the Bush administration. Until they re-realize that, they're merely dupes of Rove...
