I certainly agree with that. However, Bush has been unfailingly optimistic about our economy. Unfortunately, we are in a very bitter election season, where the Democrats are playing their ace in the hole, which is to say, they are talking down the economy as much as they can to make Bush look bad. As a result, it's not surprising that the media gets pulled into the doom and gloom scenarios that the Democrats are trying to get us all to picture.
I think things aren't so bad at all. In fact, I think they are getting better. It's not an incredibly strong rebound, but then again, everyone's expectations are way to high after the craziness of the 90's. Afterall, an average year is a 10% gain for the S&P. And if you haverage the last 2 years, then we're above that. So to me, we are clearly coming out of a pretty bad hangover from the 90's. That will take some time and it may be another 50 years before we see crazy boom times like the 90's again.
Where I live, there is 2.9% unemployement. Almost everyone who wants a job has one and the jobs they have are pretty darn good paying ones. Silicon Valley got hit hardest and will take the longest to recover, but the rest of the country has started to recover much faster, and in some place is doing quite nicely.
So no, I don't subsribe to the doom and gloom mentality of the Democrats. I take it for what it is...an election year ploy to oust a far-right Republican. |
