The Chinese are making progress on the environment for several reasons: (1) The situation is extremely bad; (2) Multinational companies use higher standards and pull the rest of the country up over time; (3) Pride -- they don't want to look like boobs on the international stage with the Olympics and World's Fair coming up soon. Bottom line -- expect improvement in Beijing and Shanghai to be rapid and dramatic -- the rest of the country will remain a pollution nightmare for the foreseeable future.
