I don't know the planned cost but it should be doable cheap. It apparently will use a low cost LCD which is normally the largest cost of many portable type devices that are similar in many ways in complexity, etc. It seems that they are ramping up for the potential of very high volumes; they have hired key Apple and Dell managers.

They don't provide much information on the product specs. It is posible for them to provide internet-TV hook up in such a device. They could make the phone similar in function to WebTV: you would plug in your TV to use as a monitor and have phone ring-through so that when you are on the internet you can still receive phone calls. The approach might have a significant advantage over the set-top box device, like WebTV because people are accutomed to purchasing the phone and plugging that in while a lot of people are still unfamiliar with setting up a set-top box. They would also have the advantage of being able to sell the units through all of the REBOCs and GETOCs who need something like this to compete with everyone that is trying to steal their phone market away from them.

I have a problem with the usefulness of a 640X480 LCD screen. How many people will want that? I guess the plan would be to offer an internet connection that would include the same functionality as the phone book and yellow pages directories plus other features. You could look up the phone number of someone by typing in their name and city or find a pizza delivery service or florist and either order via a menu prompt or just call the service for voice communication. The phone companies would probably find that attractive because they could sell yellow page advertising, which is now their virtual monopoly.
