A similar attack inside the US would strengthen the resolve. However, since it happened in faraway Russia, many people - realizing our own vulnerability - may (mistakenly) decide that perhaps they should vote for a man who might "soften" the tensions. I wonder if this consideration wasn't part of the plan.

More subtle than Spain, but it still might be - in part - an attempt to influence the election.

An indiscriminately harsh response by Russians would also send some wind into Jihad's sails.

Islamists want political power in their countries - and a "clash of civilizations". They act locally, but think globally.
