JAF,
The amount actually appears to be $28 million after a re-read. I found this info in the 8th paragraph of the PR Newswire article dated August 25, 1997 16:02.

In addition, I believe that in Q-4 they laid-off (forever) over 300 property assessors many of which had been with the company 10-15 years. While this helps future earnings (assessors will now be used as independent contractors) there were charges offs due to this. Many other employees including loan officers (many being there for more than ten years) were also let go. Aames appeared to clean house this time.

Does anyone have any opinion on whether Aames will be aquired??
