Steve, Congress gets a better pension plan than Social Security.
So they have no motivation to fix something that's broke, when they are insulated from the problem.
Congress gets treated differently than the general population.
Put Congress in the same bucket as yourself, and watch how fast they fix Social Security.
Btw, Congress also gets LTC (long-term care insurance) from MetLife. The plan Congress gets (which is a high-end plan), would cost commercially about $1,500 per year to $5,500/year (depending upon age/health.) Their dependents can also get it too, and guaranteed enrollment too.
Meanwhile, the rest of the population has to pay their own, and apply for it. My sister can't even get LTC (she had almost died a couple of years ago) even though she is healthy today. I guess she should run for Congress.
Without LTC insurance, here's the bill:
Manor Care in Los Altos costs about $8,500/month. (Yes, that's per month). "Cheap" is Manor Care in San Jose which costs "only" $6,000/month.
Once a person gets the mortgage paid off, get ready to pay for enormous monthly LTC payments.
Meanwhile, Congress (and some other federal employees) get the MetLife plan, which would pay for them and their dependents to stay in Manor Care.
