It wasn't just a coincidence that both the Democratic and Republican election platforms were mainly about war -- whether the Iraq war or the Vietnam war. In fact, both wars were against people who offered no threat to the US. But so what? Look at this chart to see how current US military expenditure is the principal reason for the enormous fiscal deficit. This expenditure -- ostensibly to protect against unknown and/or invisible foes -- is even greater than was disbursed to protect the US against the USSR, another superpower.
