The sum of all fears
Terrorism is on every voter's mind, and Bush and Kerry aren't about to forget it
By Kenneth T. Walsh - US NEWS

Suddenly, it's gotten personal. George W. Bush and John Kerry used last week's Republican National Convention as the pivot point to dispel any illusions that the fall campaign would be anything other than a savage brawl that could easily leave Americans more turned off by politics than ever. Just days before the anniversary of the September 11 attacks and a short subway ride from ground zero, Bush's Republicans pasted Kerry as an out-of-touch, weak, and wobbly liberal who simply shouldn't be trusted to lead the nation in wartime. Kerry, unsurprisingly, took deep umbrage and, only an hour after Bush delivered his acceptance speech, ripped into Vice President Cheney as a hypocrite who "refused to serve [in Vietnam] when [he] could have" and blasted Bush for having "misled America into Iraq." Furious over the continuing attacks on his war record as a swift boat commander, Kerry finally followed the advice of aides who for weeks had urged him to fire back with guns blazing. For his part, Bush learned long ago that attack politics can be very effective, so it should surprise absolutely no one to see a lot more of the same between now and November 2.
