James and all, Java to be used in smart phones. How does this effect WIND?

Alcatel, Northern Telecom to use Sun Personal Java

MOUNTAIN View, Calif., Aug. 25 (Reuter) - Sun Microsystems Inc (SUNW) said Monday that three telecommunication equipment makers will use its Java software in upcoming smart phones that can receive electronic mail.

Alcatel Alsthom (CGEP.PA), Northern Telecom Ltd (NTL.TO) and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (64050.KS) each will use Java as the software foundation of advanced telephones that can look up information on the Internet, Sun said.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Sun will get a royalty for every phone that ships with Java software in it, Alan Baratz, president of Sun's Javasoft unit.

``Looking out three or four years, we expect millions of phones to be shipped per year,'' Baratz said.

Sun's Java is a computer language that lets non-traditional computers -- such as telephones, television set-top boxes, handheld computers -- communicate with other computers through the Internet.

Alcatel, Northern Telecom and Samsung plan to sell telephones with large electronic displays that let users read their e-mail, browse the Internet's World Wide Web and look up weather and stock quotes.
