I agree that states rights used to be code for segregation. That's an old, old meme, actually goes back at least to the 1830's, if not earlier. We walked past Calhoun's house in Charleston, that man made a LOT of money on slavery. Why expect him to be selfless and noble? Jefferson, whom I admire more than almost any other, certainly wasn't selfless about politics.

Jefferson was, in fact, a lying sack of $#!+ when it came to his own self interest.

Maybe it's only us little guys who can afford to be consistent.

Right now I am wrestling with worse demons. I am finally able to read the details of the tragedy in Beslan, and I am presently wishing that every Muslim would vanish from the face of the earth. Or, if they won't do us the favor of simply vanishing, that we "vanish" them ourselves.

Not at all a Christian thing to be thinking.

My older son's first day of school was last Monday, my younger son's first day of school is tomorrow. If anything like Beslan happened to them, after tears would come revenge. Reading about it is simply unbearable.
