<<<So your adage doesn't really address the fall of Western Civilization.
..... we have some of our own seeds of destruction, which could do us in over time like decadence and hubris and apathy.>>>

At some point in time, if our society becomes more evil than good, less and less people will want to defend it. There is nothing that says Western Civilization will endure forever. It's what have you done for me lately - applies just as much to civilizations.

If something better comes along, people will vote with their hearts, minds, and feet.

<<<But that doesn't mean that some bigger and badder culture couldn't come and take over. >>>

I don't think anything bad could ever get so big that it could take us over. Of course, we could be fooled into believing this big, bad force was really good.

But, as civilization is progressing, it gets harder and harder to fool people.

<<< then there's always just plain bad luck, like a meteor. I don't think meteors care whether we're good or evil.>>>

There is nothing you could do against bad luck. But the chances are much better for you to survive if you do all the right things - which is pretty much the same as being good rather than evil.
