Here's a photo of a 757 that clearly shows how far the engines hang below the fuselage.

The Pentagon was struck at nearly ground level and the path of destruction through the 5 rings shows the impact was damn near, if not exactly, horizontal.

And here you can see that the engines are about 4 feet off the ground while the nose of the plane is nearly 3 stories off the ground.
