ECRI index confirms that economic slowdown has begun. The Economic Cycle Research Institute, an independent forecasting group, also released a report on Friday showing its weekly leading index of the U.S. economy slipped to 131.4 in the week ended Aug. 20 from 131.7 in the previous week. ECRI said a decline in mortgage applications and an increase in jobless claims were the reasons for the decline, confirming that a slowdown has begun. news.moneycentral.msn.com
