Malcolm, why not pay Canadians in a currency that actually has PM inside it, then? Would that not be the ultimate support for the country's resources.

Face it, notes are cheap and debasement cheaper. The moment Canada or any other country sees PM circulation a threat, they will ban it.

No major country can issue debt in PM these days.

Besides, if Canada is so supportive, why is Barrick allowed to participate in the 'management' of the gold price? Does it not send the wrong message to the market? You'd think Canada would want to protect their resources, and not let Barrick enter into short contracts of 20 years duration, which are illegal. Barrick has to report these in their annual report, but this market is anything but transparent. Look at all the problems listing GSE where the volume was the same everyday until it was delisted and relisted again.

Should not the Canadian gov't be a bit more vociferous in protecting its heritage?
