Communism, in and of itself is not a threat. When a communist nation professes to take over the world...that is a threat and then must be addressed. Who cares if Laos, or Vietnam wishes to be a communist nation? Who cares if the Soviets want to return to communism? They probably won't because the system doesn't work well, except maybe in an agricultural economy.

In Vietnam, as soon as the last American soldier left the country...the war was over. Where were the Vietnamese who wished to oust the communists? If they were truly oppressed, then the struggle would have continued. Guerilla tactics could have been brought to bear against the communists. But the Vietnamese people stopped fighting.

I think it's important to support a struggle to freedom, but it's not important to impose democracy on a nation of people who do not wish that.

That's the fundamental problem with the Vietnam war...the people themselves did not support the struggle.

What will ultimately determine the outcome in Iraq is how the people accept what has been thrust upon them. Will they support the new democracy? Will they replace it with a theocracy or another thugocracy? I think that most Americans will support people trying to do for themselves, but if it is shown that the Iraqi people will not fight for their own freedom, why should I fight for it for them?
