Have you looked at the standards? I haven't. If the standards are set for Nobel scientists, then I agree with you. I had the impression that the standards were set more for brick layers and even at that we struggle to reach them. I'm not sufficiently motivated to look at the standards and make a judgment.

Seems to me that brick layers should know where China is on a map and that "himself" is not appropriately used as either the subject or object of a sentence but in apposition, although they don't need to know those terms. (It would be nice, too, if they knew what federalism was but that may be too much to hope for. <g>)

Maybe we need different tiers of standards. Problem with that is that we'd be pidgeonholing either kids or schools in determining which set of standards to apply. Dunno.

I'd still like to address the problem of getting competent parents.
