Both Lincoln and Washington were exceptional men and there are still those exceptional minds that come out of nowhere and succeed regardless, but they are just that-- exceptions. We have an underclass that sees no value in school, and is defeated before they start by such poor home preparation they can't begin to catch up in vocabulary, speech, learning readiness. If they show interest they are derided by their peers and not encouraged at home.
I would also be really interested in studies of those African boys. Somehow they did believe in learning and were determined to succeed. Why? Is it that they haven't been beaten down by the American social structure and don't begin already believing they have lost?

By the way-- really excellent program if you can catch it on a rerun on PBS about Social Classes in America. (Made me want to shoot everyone with a home in the Hamptons.)
