John,

I take it you were not equally offended by the swift ads, and called then for scrapping 527's?

Maybe you read too fast. I said that the whole McCain Feingold law should be scrapped. These 527 and their ads so blatantly violate everthing about the law (letter, spirit, intent). FEC is not going to do anything about it. When one side does it, the other has to respond, so everybody is basically a criminal.

When the election is over, one side will win, the other side will lose. FEC will subsequently say that both sides violated the law. The supporters of the losers will say that their side lost because the winning side violated the law more, and that the victory was "stolen".

It is a huge mess. It will not be solved in the next 60 days. As a result, the results of the elections (and the democracy itself) will be undermined.

It seems like just the opposite of what the authors intended.

Joe
