The Inspector General (or Director) for every Federal OIG (Office of Inspector General) is a political appointee. If an investigation is considered extremely important & time sensitive, resources will be made available to complete the investigation on time. And it will be closely monitored to make sure it is.

If the investigation is not considered extremely important or time sensitive, it may still be opened. It will be but one of a number of investigations assigned to an agent or group of agents. These investigations will get worked on as time allows while their other investigations are simultaneously completed. Sometimes these investigations can take a long time to be completed.

The decision to assign investigations can come from the Regional Inspector General (RIG) or from superiors in Headquarters. On occasion the Inspector General (IG) will determine the priority of certain investigations.
