The Inspector General (or Director) for every Federal OIG (Office of Inspector General) is a political appointee. That is not true in the military. Military Inspector Generals are experienced commissioned officers usually grade Lt Col or higher. They are provided certain protections that enable them to investigate every level of command. It is an excellent system that provides effective protection to military members.
