Glenn,

In a short answer, yes, you can guesstimate within a reasonable range as to where the Dow will open depending upon the S&P futures price. However, a small, yet sometimes confusing part, is that to tell whether the S&P future number will indicate a negative or positive market opening depends upon where that number closed the previous day. There are times when the number is negative in the morning, but it really means a "positive" market opening. Just because the number may be negative is not necessarily a bad thing. However, in this case, down 9 is not good.
