The majority of eligible young men in this country did not serve in the military in 1968-70. George Bush volunteered to fly jet fighter planes, which would not make him a good risk for life insurance. He was subject at any time for assignment to a combat area, which would have made him a much worse risk. I'd say the country got its money's worth. Unlike John Kerry, Bush never boasted of his service or claimed it as a basis for electing him president. Moreover, inasmuch as Bush happened not to be called up for Vietnam, he had the grace to allow that Kerry's combat tour was more heroic than his own service.

I'd say that makes George Bush a man of outstanding character.
