As a general rule, I think think that private investment is more efficient. I am not, however, a libertarian, and things like the space program and the Internet fit into my idea of infrastructural improvements, those things of over- riding general benefit that would not readily develop if left to the market.

On the others, my point is exactly that we do not know what the ultimate cost of the war might be, so your responses are appropriate. What we do know is that our enemies are encouraged by our weakness, and discouraged by our resolve.
