You are probably talking about Fred Thompson. While most of them do volunteer, some of them get rewarded withprime positions in administration (not that there is anything wrong with that).

She did have an opinion piece in WSJ about Dubya not doing well in the press conference. Dunno if that was the motivation to go and join his team to help them in anyway.
