I am happy to clarify: the soldier in the field knowingly takes on more risk than the driver of a car, and the percentage of fatalities is far greater in the theater of operations. It requires much more bravery, and the cause is, of course, better. We owe a special debt to those who have served. My only point is that bandying-about raw numbers is a rhetorical flourish, and tells us little about whether fatalities are excessive or light, or whether they are worth it..........
