Highlights
First-time jobless claims plunged 44,000 in the September 4 week -- the largest single drop in nearly three years!

The new level of 319,000 is the lowest since early July.

But seasonal factors surrounding the later Labor Day weekend this year may have exaggerated the improvement.

In addition the Labor Department warned the data were skewed lower by the after-effects of Hurricane Charley, which exaggerated claims to the upside in the prior two weeks.

Dramatic swings in this series are common though today's is unusually severe. The best way to look at the data is to use the four-week average, which helps to dampen week-to-week effects....
