Indigenous groups who are fighting what they consider an oppressor, like the Chechens fighting the Russians, will take help anywhere they can get it as they are clearly underdogs. They have no reason to fight what we consider to be terrorism, which mostly targets the locals' enemies.
Everyone is down on the Chechens, but in my view they have had a well-justified centuries-old beef with the Russians, who have been anything but compromising. Brutal, in fact.
In a lot of ways, the Russians are getting what they deserve, though obviously the killing of kids is an abomination. We certainly don't see the global press get worked up over Russian atrocities, do we? And they have taken place:

It's one of the most difficult political situations in the planet, but no one who looks at things clearly can say that the Russians are blameless. Or the Chechens, for that matter.
A pox on both their houses, though on principle I favor self-determination. If a large enough number of Chechens want to become free of the Russians, why shouldn't they be allowed to do so? |
