Jewell, re: why Islam and Democracy are compatible concepts

This is a red herring. There are a lot of unexplained assumptions that go into the Bush/Cheney line of reasoning that:

*All people want freedom
*Free people are happy people and don't become terrorists
*A free and democratic Iraq will not pose a threat to us
*Iraq will stand as a shining example and transform the region.

Let's just take a look at the first one. Sure, all people want freedom for themselves. How much do they want to live in a world where they "share" freedom with others. That is, how willing are they to abide by "democratic" rule. Remember that democracy requires that we accept compromises to what we believe. It is the tyranny of the majority.

In rigid, narrow and extreme societies, the tolerance level of the majority will be low. Imagine in this country if the religious right was in total control of government? Then multiply that rigidity many times over in a nation that is devoutly Muslim. Now, is that "freedom?" Will that lead to "happy people that stand as a shining example?" Will they be western friendly?

The fact is that there are at least three different factions in Iraq. There are the Sunnis, the Shi'ites and the Kurds. Now what kind of democracy of a majority of Shi'ite rule do you think the Sunnis will accept? How about the Kurds? These people are DEVOUT AND RIGID in their beliefs. Saddam Hussein controlled them with brutality and guns. But suddenly with our kind guidance they will meet Rodney King's wish that "why can't we all just get along?"

How stupid are we to accept such tripe?

Don't answer that.

PS. If Bush/Cheney believe their own words, they're idiots. If they don't belive them then they're not stupis but they're liars. What is really behind the war in Iraq?
