Jewell, I must have hit a nerve. I don't think you can find anything in my posting that should have led you to conclude that I am "opposing the religious." Or that I have an "anti-religious bent."

In fact I'm all for religions. Let people worship as they please. The point of my post was that some religions are not tolerant at all. If you have a "democracy" of such intolerant "believers" who are a majority, you will have a democracy, the question is whether that democracy will be one we will admire, or one we will abhor. Remember my line that democracy is the tyranny of the majority?

Given that explanation, do you not see the potential injustice of supporting democracy in a people that do not have a history of tolerance, do not have judicial, cultural or faith based institutions that will protect the rights of minorities and believe in extreme and brutal punishment for those who refuse to follow the "right" path?

If you don't see that potential for injustice then it's you who are a "bit revisionistic" in your view of history. Remember that "ancestors fled" thing? Ed
