When I took typing class in 1968 we used both the remington manual, fixed font, and the IBM selectric 2 with it's variable font "golf ball". That spacing was not only available then, but was available when my older brother took the class a couple years before me.

The font balls came in 10 or 12 pitch and included Roman, Courier, and a script font. The basic windows fonts were based on them.
