Understanding the enemy
"Know Your Enemy" - Special Broadcast to Air on Global Television
TORONTO, Sept. 8 /CNW/ - On Tuesday, September 14th, Global Television
will present "Know Your Enemy," an extraordinary joint special of Global News
and National Post. In one of its most ambitious joint special broadcasts to
date, the two award-winning news organizations will probe the real, and
perceived, level of threat, as the world commemorates the third anniversary of
9/11 and continues to face a growing fear of international terrorist attacks.
"Know Your Enemy" will be hosted by Global National News Executive Editor
and anchor, Kevin Newman, who will travel to New York to talk to Americans
about how their views and lives have changed since September 2001, and in the
wake of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. How have these two seminal events changed
the way Americans view themselves and the fight against terrorism?
To track the spread of terrorism and understand the movement, Global News
and National Post dispatched a team of journalists to Pakistan, London,
Bosnia, New York and Washington to try to deconstruct the threat, identify the
new terrorists, and consider their potential targets.
In Washington, Troy Reeb will investigate how this new generation of
terrorists use the Internet to recruit and spread their message, and will
examine the efforts of the CIA and the Pentagon to battle this new enemy.
In Pakistan, award-winning journalist and novelist Stewart Bell, who is
on the Bin Laden hunt along the Pakistan-Afghani border, will trace the roots
of al Qaeda and its ideology, from its birth in Pakistan to the training camps
of Afghanistan and its resurrection into the third wave.
In Europe, where many believe that al Qaeda and its affiliates are more
deeply entrenched than in North America, war zone veteran and Islamic
specialist Jane Kokan, winner of the European Reporters Bravery Award, will
explore the new immigrant communities and how the al Qaeda threat has
infiltrated and affected them.
Since the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon
in Washington, DC, and the invasion of both Iraq and Afghanistan, there have
been an unprecedented 12 major terrorist attacks on western targets. What
began as an al Qaeda offensive has morphed into a multi-pronged, often
nameless and faceless attack on western civilization. It is a movement that is
finding a voice through dozens of like-minded regional terrorist groups
throughout the world.
How well do we understand the enemy? How real and how imminent is the
continuing threat? Have we done enough to thwart another attack on North
American soil?
From points around the world, Global News and National Post will examine
every facet and aspect of al Qaeda's third wave. Don't miss this
groundbreaking special.

"Know Your Enemy" will air as follows:
Ontario/Quebec/British Columbia - 10pm
Manitoba/Saskatchewan - 9pm
Maritimes/Alberta - 8pm
