NT USERS GAIN "HOLY GRAIL" OF SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE; ENLIGHTEN DSM ADDS WINDOWS NT SUPPORT TO PROVIDE BROADER CONTROL OF DISTRIBUTED APPLICATIONS
SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1997--ENlighten Software Solutions (NASDAQ:SFTW, www.enlighten.sftw.com), today announced immediate availability of support for the Windows NT(TM) operating system in its ENlighten/Distributed Systems Manager (DSM) product. DSM has been widely recognized as the leading distributed systems controller for UNIX, and called the "Holy Grail" in this market.
From today, ENlighten/DSM Release 2.2 provides centralized, "push-button" control of mixed Windows NT and UNIX environments. DSM features a broad set of essential, cross-platform services and an open integration strategy that gives the industry's best return on investment in distributed systems management software. Deere and Company (Moline, IL), a global manufacturing and services company, is using ENlighten/DSM in support of its corporate office network. Mr. Tom Waldman, Manager of Corporate Office Networks, selected DSM with an eye to increasing first-call close rates from 50% to 80% for UNIX and NT problems.
The new functionality provides seamless monitoring and management of UNIX and NT hosts through a simplified, common user interface. With a single click, complex administrative functions - such as addition of a user - can be performed across a heterogeneous collection of hundreds of machines. Third party NT applications can now join the growing list of distributed solutions which are centrally controlled through ENlighten/DSM's open integration strategy. Additionally, a single status map now displays the health of all Digital UNIX, HP-UX, IBM AIX, SCO UNIX, SGI Irix, Sun OS, Sun Solaris, and Windows NT systems in the network.
UNIX capabilities extended to NT include: -- Archival of NT data to UNIX tapes, and vice versa.
-- Management of Domain Name Service (DNS) configuration across NT and UNIX. -- Process monitoring and control
-- Disk usage monitoring -- File searching, and detection of file changes.
-- Remote file distribution with pre- and post-processing scripts -- Events monitoring for cpu load, network statistics, and many other standard and user-configurable tests.
-- Administration of user accounts in a manner consistent with UNIX. "The greatest area of information technology change for most organizations today revolves around UNIX and NT," said Byron Jacobs, Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Services. "We're finding that many organizations are depending on their UNIX systems administration staff to implement NT and provide service coverage to new NT users. ENlighten/DSM significantly reduces the time and effort required to accomplish those goals. It makes Windows NT administration a simple extension of what they already practice. Several accounts have already deployed hundreds of servers and workstations utilizing the ease of use, power and integration of 'best of breed' products with ENlighten/DSM."
Pricing for ENlighten/DSM starts at $195 for a single workstation and $495 per server. A typical, initial, 10-node configuration can be expected to average approximately $2,000 per node. It comes complete with the Group Management Server (GMS), Distributed Systems Agents (DSAs), and a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Founded in 1986, ENlighten Software Solutions Inc. provides distributed systems management software solutions for the UNIX-NT systems and Tandem marketplaces. The Company's ENlighten for UNIX-NT product suite provides system management solutions for Windows NT and heterogeneous UNIX systems including DEC, Sun Microsystems, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, SGI and SCO.
