In Word, the superscripts for "th", "st", "nd", "rd" are automatic only if preceded by numerals. I seriously doubt if the Kerry camp can be so inept to be responsible for this, it would have to be someone who has never seen a typewriter and didn't realize that microsoft word and windows and truetype fonts did not exist in '74.
