The "south" was the fiefdom of the French, and then it was ours. Vietnam was partitioned in a war with the French who were defeated in the north but not in the south. The Vietnam war (or the the "American war" as it is called in Vietnam), finished the job of ending foreign domination -- foreign domination was wrong, and it ended badly. The scale of the killing was our choice. Reunification was their choice.
