The Vietnamese drove the French from the North -- we took over in the South after the French had decided it was not worth it to hold onto their colony.

The French and the US helped establish the government in the South, well the US helped established the government in the South of Korea, the West of Germany and in many other places as well. The fact that a country is set up with the help of foreign powers doesn't make it less of a country, nor does it mean that aggression against it, even aggression by people trying to reestablish a country in something like its traditional boundaries is not aggression.

The US did not want to see Vietnam unified.

The US would have been fine with having Vietnam (and Korea) unified. They just didn't want to see the communists take over.

and now they are free.

That is a bit of an exaggeration don't you think?
