If you follow Morgan Stanley's Chief Economist Stephen Roach, he reported several months ago after returning from a trip to Asia that despite several years passing since the end of the Asian crisis, Asian economies have done little to build domestic demand. By buying US treasuries these nations support their best customer. One analogy is that in the US one's credit score (FICO) decreases if you have credit that you do not use (ie have credit cards that you don't tap into) The US is a 'credit card' that gets used well.
