I will, but first understand the Prophets are scholars or teachers. They pass on the word of Muhammad. He was the messenger and received devine inspiration from Allah.
All of the greater movements and sects involved in Islam are rooted in a particular prophets, scholar or teacher. Much like Priests, Rabbis etc. Some Muslims reject the use of the term Prophet for anyone except the Messenger.
Muhammad Bin Abdul-Wahaab was the last of the noted scholarsa
and actually very far removed in respect to the relative time line. He cxalled for the cleansing of Islam and the faith to follow the words of Muhammad alone and not and of the natural progressions of the faith as taught by any of the previous Scholars. He rendered (to those of his faith) all other sects invalid. They did then and do know have very skillful conversion techniques. They first embrace the targeted Muslim's teacher (Prophet/Scholar) and discuss Islam. They then point to the inevitible teaching that the scholar is not Allah and only Muhammad was the Messenger. All scholars state that during the intellectual course of discussion. They are inevitably brought to that discussion as natural questions of morality, wisdom, law etc are taken to the boundaries of the scholars experience and knowledge. The discussions were either recorded or past on verbally, but the scholars just and appropriate statements of his own limits were simply accepted and he was admired for his devotion and wisdom.
It is there where the sharp Wahabbi points to the Scholars own admission of being less than Allah or the Messenger and decalre any alterations of the faith as recommended by that Scholar are not of Islam and simply of that man.
So it goes on today. The irony of it all is of course that the Wahabbi places Muhammad Bin Abdul-Wahaab in a quasi sacred position that must be denied eventually.
That is as you request a Cliff's note on the subject. It is far more complex, but as you read more an more, you begin to understand it to a greater degree.
Islam, as with other faiths progresses and evolves with the civilized world. Yet , some sects are exceptions and their exceptions vary. The greatest problem other sects and other peoples experience, is when a State adopts Islamic Law as the law of the Kingdom. In many instances the reasoning is to maintain a greater control of the masses. Islam is a relatively new religion. It did however, convert by force many peoples in the Middle East and beyond.
I will post some links that should be interesting. If you don't believe that Islamic Scolars refute Wahhabism as Vile, read about it.
