desperation at the extreme end of frustration I see that for the most part Islamist terror is driven by cold (geo)political calculation. OBL and his Wahhabbi alQaedista crowd are pursuing the "constructive" goal of capturing political power in Muslim countries and plan to turn them all into theocracies. Hamas and Co. will never under any circumstances accept Israel's right to exist, and are fighting to throw Jews into the sea. Chechen "separatists" no longer seek separation, but rather to be absorbed into a framework of a Caucasian Caliphate. Shooting Beslan children in the back was also a result of cold political calculation, designed to flare up the war and to help create a "Revolutionary situation", as Lenin might have said. "Insurgents" in Iraq are fighting to win - to win against a superpower - and such a victory would put in their hat a feather the size of a galaxy. All this terror is not really defensive... it's mostly aggressive, pro-active... steps towards the eventual victory of the global Jihad.
