"Nixon went to China in the early seventies and developed a far-sighted foreign policy towards China that has made the world a far safer place and brought China into the world community. He also got us out of Vietnam. We could have stayed in Vietnam forever, bombing and killing, but we left."

Cool. You are almost right. Right on the Nixon/China thing. Wrong on vietnam where nixon prolonged a war for five or six more years at the cost of an additional 20,000 american lives and untold vietnamese. What do you think, the period between 1968 and 1974 in Vietnam was a picnic? Do you honestly believe we could have been anymore thouroughly defeated and embarrassed if he pulled out in 1969 or 1970 instead? The only thing nixon proved is that the US was so stubborn that we could extend a losing operation for another 6 years for nothing. I suspect that bush will not make the same mistake in iraq if post election the news continues like this. Fall back will be termination date and ultimate fallback position will be the "meatloaf" solution--2 outa 3 aint bad--as both kurd and shia state take hold with kirkuk in the kurd state and bagdad in the shiaa after a bloody civil war in bagdad won by your "comer" in iraq, al sadr. Sunnis are digging their own grave in iraq by not accepting the reality of their end of privelige. They stood by while shiaa and kurds were persecuted. They were offered a place at the table. Time to issue the deadline and give then one last chance to accept their minority status in a somewhat democratic, somewhat secular, somwhat multi cultural iraq. mike
