He HAD a deferment, lost it, applied for another, was denied, then joined the Navy figuring that would be the service he was least likely to get hurt in (Vietnam wasn't a naval war) and hgot into an offshore patrol group, further decreasing the odds. Then the assignment of that group was changed to river patrol.

And he shat his pants.
