It is really quite simple. Of the billion+ Muslims there is a substantial % who believe in a literal interpretation of the Koran. My estimate is more than 10% which of course would mean 100,000,000+. The Koran tells the believers to KILL the infidels. The result is a big protracted problem for those who refuse to believe in the Koran. Death and destruction for decades. For them death, as a martyr, is preferred to a life of love (thy neighbor).

Of course, this is not a new development since it started at the very beginning of Islam in the 7th century. Note how I was unable to superscript the "th".
