In 1970 I was trained on a Novar automatic terminal, which was a competitor against the IBM automatic with text editing capabilities and ran at 14.5 characters per second. At that time I believe that the Selectric ll unit stand alone without the I/o was around $825.00. Don't quote me because I had little to do with sales. My memory fails me as to whether the Air Force was using them during the early 70s.

My point is that if the computer I/O was already being used the Selectric as a typewriter was probably pretty standard fare, even for the military.
