Brumar, The pilot question is easy: it's a glamor job for a guy who's entire life is pretending to be something he isn't. Half the guys I knew wanted to be pilots. They didn't think the Vietnamese could get them. They were wrong.

I knew people who got into NG units, too, many of whom were in basic training with me. It did not take pull everywhere, as some parts of the country didn't have enough. But a "never go" outfit like Bush's or Quayle's definitely took pull.
