I maintain that the pdf files have a very high signal to noise ratio. The thing that would match best would be the spacing. Why? Because Microsoft intentionally tried to make it's windows output look like the quality typewriters of it's day (especially their then partner IBM). It would be a design goal to have the TTF output look as much like the equipment that buyers already knew and desired. I'm sure their sales force often presented side by side comparisons of their output and that of standard office machines.
