Wave Systems Corp. Offers Monotype Fonts on the Great Stuff Network
Fonts Purchasable Online Through Wave's Internet Merchandising Engine
LEE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1997--Wave Systems Corp. (NASDAQ:WAVX), a provider of electronic content distribution and commerce services, and Monotype Typography (www.monotype.com), the leading supplier of fonts-to-desktop publishers and software developers, Tuesday announced that a suite of Monotype fonts will be available for online purchase through Wave's Internet distribution service, the Great Stuff Network.
``The Internet is clearly the fastest delivery channel today, and Wave's Internet commerce solution is tailor made for our purposes,'' said Steve Kuhlman, vice president of sales and marketing for Monotype. ``The Great Stuff Network will offer our customers immediate and convenient access to Monotype fonts.''
Launched in April, Great Stuff Network content is divided into categories -- including Utilities, Games, Sports and Business -- for consumers' browsing convenience. Wave's end-to-end Internet commerce system features publish, purchase and transaction processing services.
Known worldwide for providing font solutions to hardware and software developers, Monotype offers WorldType, a font set conforming to Unicode font standard that provides worldwide language solutions, and has provided typographic and engineering services to Microsoft.
Agfa and Monotype allied in January to produce and distribute the Creative Alliance CD, a joint-type CD-ROM product, and to drive a range of initiatives supporting the international creative design community. With more than 5,900 unique typefaces, the Creative Alliance CD comprises the industry's largest collection of typefaces on CD-ROM.
``Monotype customers can now purchase and receive delivery of selected fonts within minutes through the Great Stuff Network,'' said Steven Sprague, president of Wave. ``This will give designers more flexibility with respect to both time-savings and font options.''
Wave produces a distributed information metering and transaction service, the Wave System, based on its proprietary metering technology, the WaveMeter chip. The WaveMeter protects content partners' intellectual property and permits pricing options that include rent-to-own and pay-per-use.
Wave is also developing CD-ROM and data broadcast distribution products, expected to launch later this year: CD-ROM bundles that will be sold through retail channels, and DataTrain, Wave's broadcast distribution channel. Kuhlman said Monotype will distribute fonts through the CD bundles and DataTrain.
Since the invention of the of the original Monotype hot-metal type composing machine and the establishment of the Monotype Corp. nearly 100 years ago, Monotype has been committed to supplying products of the highest quality to the publishing and computer industries.
Monotype Typography has offices at Redhill (Surrey, England); Chicago; Palo Alto, Calif.; and Hong Kong. The Monotype Typeface Library is one of the finest and most comprehensive collections in the world, and includes such well-known and widely used typefaces as Arial, Bembo, Gill Sans and Times New Roman, the original ``Times'' typeface. The company develops and markets fonts and software for computer systems and peripherals.
Wave, with headquarters in Lee, produces a distributed information metering and transaction service, the Wave System, for use in consumer entertainment and education applications. This year, Wave introduced the Great Stuff Network for individual and corporate content creators to securely sell and distribute its products through the Internet via the Wave System.
The Wave System permits microtransactions as low as fractions of a penny. Wave is also developing electronic commerce solutions that will provide electronic content providers with secure distribution as well as new marketing and pricing options that include rental, rent-to-own, purchase and pay-per-use transactions.
The Wave System gives consumers the convenience and control of obtaining content via the Internet, and eventually CD-ROM and broadband transmissions. For more information about Wave, see Wave's home page at wave.com .
